The inspiration for this project is my girlfriend and life partner.
She was dissatisfied with lash cases, because the case curvature that held the lashes weren't the same shape as her eyes. So, every time lashes were stored in the case, they would retain the case's shape, which was frustrating to work with when applying the lashes. My solution: create a lash case that had my partner's exact eye shape.
I started with a top down photo of a lash my partner had recently worn, one that specifically had a thick band. The thick band helped the lash retain its shape, even after it was removed from her eye. From this photo, I could create a DXF of the band shape.
I suspected there was still some error with this method, so from the lash I had traced, I printed out a gauge we could test on my partner's eye. It wasn't perfect, but it was a starting point! From this gauge, we could specifically see what parameters needed to be tuned to get closer to the actual eye shape my partner has.
We prototyped with a few more gauges until we landed on something that matched her exact eye profile.
From there. I developed the full eyelash case.
The goal of this eyelash case was to not only have the exact curvature of my partner's eyes, but also be convenient to carry around and easy to use.
Below, you'll see a side-profile of the case's base. The base is slanted to not only allow the lashes to rest on a slant similar to the human eye, but also promote the "U"-like curvature the side profile of lashes have.
The circle seen on the bottom right side of the image below allows for the case's lid to hinge on the base.
I also wanted the case to have a clean user experience, so I integrated a magnetic clasp to hold the case closed. These magnets are press-fit on both the base & lid, and it creates a satisfying snap when you close the case. This allows for the case to stay secure and shut when it's thrown in a bag and traveling, but also still a seamless experience opening the case to use the lashes. They can be seen below, highlighted/circled in orange.
